Amounts charged by the tax authority (Portugal)
In addition to penalties, the tax authority will charge interest on underpaid or overclaimed VAT. The interest is supposed to represent commercial restitution so is not normally charged in situations where there is no net loss of VAT.
Interest is normally charged where a business:
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý is assessed by the tax authority and it is found that the VAT returns understate the true liability; or
- Ìý
•ÌýÌýÌýÌý finds an error on a VAT return and sends a disclosure
