Flexible working
The Flexible Working Act (Wet Flexibel Werken) provides employees with the right to request more working hours or less working hours or to change their work location once they have been employed for 26 weeks. A request can only be done once a year, but the employer must allow this request unless it has a detrimental effect on the business. The change in working conditions can be a temporary one.
The employee's request must be made to the employer in writing, at least two months before the change is due to start.
Employers with less than ten employees are exempt from the Act.
Short-time working
An employer may introduce short-time working or even temporarily suspend all work. The employer may have to consult with or seek the agreement of the works council and is advised to check the relevant CAO (Collective Agreement).
