Aside from the EU Social Security Agreement (6.1.1), Portugal has bilateral agreements with several countries.
The Multilateral Ibero-American Social Security Agreement is also applicable in Portugal. This is an instrument coordinating the different social security legislation on pensions of the different states that have ratified it and signed the Implementation Agreement (currently Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay, as well as Portugal). In May 2024, Honduras signed up to the Agreement, subject to completion of its internal ratification process.
The Portuguese Social Security defines posted workers as a worker who is sent to Portugal to carry out a professional activity at the service of their employer, on a temporary basis, with a duration that should not foreseeably exceed 12 months (although a longer period may be permitted if duly justified).
