Social security agreements try to coordinate social security entitlement for people working in jurisdictions that are different from their normal home. They do this by:

•ÌýÌýÌýÌý agreeing which country will require contributions from the individual (ie elimination of dual coverage)

•ÌýÌýÌýÌý totaling periods of coverage in both countries to fill contributory gaps in qualifying periods for benefits (ie totalisation of coverage periods)
